The Literary Club of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai is delighted to invite you to a talk on “The Vocabulary of Marathi Food” by Saee Koranne-Khandekar, on Tuesday, 17th December at 5.30 p.m. at the Durbar Hall of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai. This talk attempts to question the conventional vocabulary of Marathi food and trace its origins. It also hopes to showcase the successes and failures of employing universal terms to define the cuisines of the region; does renaming a Bhakri as Taco make it more aspirational and, therefore, more welcoming to a non-Marathi, younger consumer? Must all modern interpretations be labelled "fusion" and must they involve liquid nitrogen to qualify?
The speaker will also talk about the occurrence of food imagery in oral Marathi literature and how it serves to be a source of food wisdom.
Supported by readings from the book, “Pangat, A Feast”, and a visual presentation of the author's work, this talk attempts to debunk the myths that surround Marathi cuisine among those who are familiar with it as well as those who are curious about it.
About the author:
The speaker, Saee Koranne-Khandekar is an author and culinary consultant. She researches and writes primarily on food, where her interests include indigenous cuisines, baking, and culinary literature. She is the author of the widely reviewed Crumbs!: Bread Stories and Recipes for the Indian Kitchen and writes extensively on baking and regional cuisines in their historical and socio-cultural contexts, and has been awarded the Food Chroniclers Award, 2019. Her second book, “Pangat: A Feast”, navigates the many sub-cuisines of Maharashtra and attempts to break the myths that surround the food of the land.
Saee is also an amateur poet. Her work can be read on www.saeekhandekar.com, and in various print and online journals.
