The Literary Club of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai takes pleasure in inviting you to a talk by Sumathi Sridhar on her recently published book in Tamil “Deivangalin Ayudhangal” on Friday 15th March 2024 at 5.00 p.m. in the Durbar Hall of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai.
The talk titled “Weapons of our Gods” will be in English and will cover key aspects of the book which traces the iconographic evolution of Indic deities (Hindu, Folk and Buddhist), and weapons they wield over the Vedic, Epic and Puranic periods of Indian history.
Sumathi Sridhar is a financial analyst turned Indic culture and mythology enthusiast. She is a visiting faculty member for the course in Advanced Diploma at the University of Mumbai. She writes and speaks on mythology in both English and Tamil. She runs a YouTube channel “Kulture Katha” where she shares lesser known stories from the wondrous universe of Indian lore.

“Kundalini Yoga in Narsinh Mehta’s Poems” by Dr. Jawahar Bakshi

The Literary Club of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai takes pleasure in inviting you to a bilingual talk “Kundalini Yoga in Narsinh Mehta’s Poems” by Dr. Jawahar Bakshi on Monday 26th February 2024 at 5 p.m. in the Durbar Hall of the Society.
In the talk, Dr. Bakshi will delve into the Kundalini Yoga aspect in Narsinh Mehta's poems. This involves opening up all eight lotuses in the mystical poem “Jalkamal Chhandi Ja Ne Bala." Rising from the Root Chakra gradually leading to the Crown Chakra and ultimately reaching the Soul star chakra - this yoga path is implicitly narrated in this simple yet celebrated poem.
Dr. Jawahar Bakshi Is a multifaceted personality. A Chartered Accountant by profession, he was awarded a Ph.D. degree for his thesis on “Spirituality in the poetry of Narsinh Mehta." The thesis won him the Narsinh Mehta Award as well as the Bhogilal Sandesara award for his Ph.D. thesis. In addition, he teaches Transcendental Meditation.
The Maharashtra State Gujarati Sahitya Academy has honoured him with the Jeevan Gaurav Award. His work on poetry is recognised by both the Gujarati Parishad and the Gujarati Sahitya Academy. He is also a recipient of the prestigious Narmad Gold Medal and Kalapi Award.
He has been invited across the globe to deliver lectures on Indian Philosophy, Yoga, Meditation and Literature of Saints. Moreover, he is a pioneer in modern romantic mysticism and pure poetry with spiritual experience in Gujarati Gazals.

Captain Alexander Burnes of the 21st Bombay Native Infantry ranks among the foremost of nineteenth century British explorers. His detailed accounts of peoples and places he encountered while on missions in Kutch, in Sindh in the Bombay Presidency or navigating the 1000-mile course of the Indus river, were filled with new insights. Burnes also explored Punjab, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Persia, and opened the eyes of the Western world to ‘exotic’ lands and cultures.
Burnes was a member of the Managing Committee of the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society as well as the Geographical Society of Bombay.
